US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
As of October 15, 216,025 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the United States; however, this might underestimate the total impact of the pandemic on mortality.
…
Overall, an estimated 299,028 excess deaths occurred from late January through October 3, 2020, with 198,081 (66%) excess deaths attributed to COVID-19. The largest percentage increases were seen among adults aged 25–44 years and among Hispanic or Latino persons.
Throughout my life I’ve seen US media use phrases like the „tragedy of Vietnam“ to describe a US war against a small agrarian nation in which the US murdered 2,000,000-4,000,000 Southeast Asians. In US eyes the „tragedy“ was that some 58,000 Americans died. It occurred to me this morning that just as US deaths from covid equal the deaths from 9/11/2001 every few days, the covid deaths the US fails to account for number more than the US losses during the Vietnam War.
